Over the last five years, CS&S has built a unique community around a vision for the future of technology. Our work points towards a future where open research, open data, and open source technology initiatives are community-centered practices that prioritize transparency and global participation. Throughout the ongoing challenges of 2021, our programs and projects have grown and continue to thrive. This year, the work in our three programs — the Fiscal Sponsorship Program, the data science Event Fund, and the Digital Infrastructure Incubator — centered on themes of resilience, broadening participation and access, and capacity-building. Our Data Science Event Fund (call for proposals now open) directly invests in data training communities around the globe. With the support of funding partners, this program has awarded over $350,000 USD in grants to 24 event organization teams hailing from 21 countries across five continents, with events reaching thousands of participants located in over 90 countries. This year we launched the Digital Infrastructure Incubator to help emergent leaders bridge research and practice in open source digital infrastructure. Donations directed to Code for Science & Society support our organization’s core operations and these two programs.
The Sponsored Project program at CS&S houses a unique group of mission-aligned initiatives. Our sponsored projects include open source tools for data, research and open scholarship, as well as advocacy, research, and training communities. Our sponsored project teams found creative ways to engage their communities in regional skill-building events and public seminars designed to spur community growth, as well as datathons. Projects released new toolkits to train peer reviewers and new internet measurement tools, shared new documentation on data-cleaning tools, published articles, and built sustainability through maturing governance and strategic planning. To highlight one project, Reproducibility for Everyone (R4E) focuses on community-led workshops at scientific conferences to increase adoption of open research practices at scale. R4E has seen incredible growth and impact in 2021 with over 50 workshops on 6 continents and 3000+ participants. Follow their seasonal giving campaign on their blog and @repro4everyone.
