Infrastructure Engineer

was launched in 2013, and has nearly doubled in usage and impact
every year. In 2025 we have over 2 million active monthly users, and
will serve over 3000 scientific publishing venues. Our fully-remote
10-person team is collaborative, engaged, service-minded, and
growing.
Position Overview
OpenReview
is seeking a versatile Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to join us in a
remote position to manage and optimize our cloud-based platform that
serves the scientific research community. This remote, hybrid role
combines cloud engineering, system administration, security, data
engineering, and data analysis responsibilities. Candidates must be
based in the United States and have valid authorization to work in
the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud
Infrastructure Management
-
Manage and optimize our Google
Cloud Platform environment, including Compute Engine instances,
Vertex AI services, nginx web servers, MongoDB databases, Redis
databases, and Elasticsearch clusters
-
Implement,maintain, and analyze
comprehensive logging, monitoring, and alerting systems across all
services
-
Optimize cloud resource
utilization and costs to ensure efficient spending while maintaining
performance standards
-
Design and implement
infrastructure as code practices for scalable and reproducible
deployments
- Configure
permissions using IAM
System
Administration & Reliability
-
Monitor and ensure platform
performance and availability, especially during high-traffic
conference submission periods (4-5 major conferences annually)
-
Proactively identify and
resolve performance bottlenecks before they impact users
-
Maintain high availability and
disaster recovery procedures
- Implement
security best practices and ensure compliance with data protection
requirements
Data
Engineering & Migration
-
Design and execute data
migration strategies to support evolving schema requirements
-
Ensure data consistency and
integrity across all database systems
-
Develop automated data
validation and quality assurance processes
-
Create and maintain data backup
and recovery procedures
-
Collaborate with development
teams to optimize database performance and query efficiency
- ETL
pipeline design and implementation to import data from external
academic databases and conference systems, as well as export
OpenReview data to publishers, repositories, and research platforms
Collaborative
Support & Knowledge Transfer
-
Work closely with the
Engineering Lead to transition infrastructure responsibilities and
gain deep understanding of existing systems

Collaborate with development
and support teams to troubleshoot and resolve user-reported issues
-
Learn existing architectural
decisions and operational procedures while contributing fresh
perspective on improvements

Participate in incident
response and post-mortem analysis
- Document
system architecture, procedures, and troubleshooting guides as you
learn and improve systems
Required
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Computer
Science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent
experience
-
3+ years of experience with
cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure, etc.

Strong experience with Linux
system administration and command-line tools
-
Experience with CI/CD pipeline
management
-
Knowledge of automated
deployment strategies and release processes
-
Strong experience with database
administration, particularly MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch
Knowledge of web server configuration and optimization (nginx, load
balancing)
-
Experience with Redis
configuration, clustering, and performance optimization
-
Experience with infrastructure
monitoring and logging tools
-
Scripting skills in Python,
Bash, or similar languages
- Understanding
of data migration strategies and ETL processes
Preferred
Qualifications

Experience with Google Cloud
administration

Experience with machine
learning platforms and Vertex AI

Knowledge of academic
publishing workflows and peer review processes

Experience with high-traffic
web applications and scaling challenges

Experience with CI/CD pipelines
in GitHub Actions

Experience with cost
optimization tools and cloud financial management

Knowledge of data privacy
regulations and compliance requirements
- Previous
experience in academic or research-oriented environments
Physical
Requirements:
-
Prolonged periods of sitting at
a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15
pounds at times.
- Travel
twice per year to a work-week-long in-person team strategic planning
retreat.

Compensation:
The
starting pay range for this remote role is $120,000 to $150,000 .
Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the
candidate’s actual work location, relevant experience, technical
skills, and other qualifications. Historically most years all
employees also receive a yearly bonus.
